Confirmation

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

As a Sacrament of Initiation, Confirmation is intimately related to Baptism and the

Eucharist. Christians are reborn in Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation, and

sustained by the food of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Specifically,

in Confirmation they are signed with the SEVEN GIFTS of the Holy Spirit and become

more perfect images of their Lord. Confirmation renews and strengthens the Christian’s

baptismal call to bear witness to Christ before the world and work eagerly for the

building up of His Body, the Church. Confirmation emphasizes the transformation of life

by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in his fullness. Confirmed Christians claim as fully

their own the new life into which they were first initiated at Baptism. The Church

community expresses its continued support and concern for the spiritual growth of those

confirmed, while the newly confirmed promise, in turn, to help others grow and mature in

the Christian life. Because of the serious importance of this sacrament, it is conferred by

the Diocesan Bishop or his delegate. Within our parish community, Diana Castillo directs

the Confirmation preparation program with a team of ministers, parents, sponsors, and

the spiritual guidance from Father Kevin, as well as other priests and parishioners. High

school youth and young adults who believe they are ready and prepared to enter more

seriously and fully into the living of Christian faith make a deeply personal choice to be

confirmed in a faithful community. Thus, candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation

realize the following requirements:

Be 16 years old prior to the date of the celebration of the Sacrament. (July 31 st )

Be actively involved in the practice of their Catholic faith (attending Mass

regularly).

Make a commitment to the scheduled sessions.

Be willing to participate in forty hours of community service projects.

Have no more than THREE EXCUSED ABSENCES.

Attend and participate in the Confirmation Retreat(s).

Participation in the Youth Ministry Program is encouraged.

Important notice: To register for Confirmation in the 2008 -2009 school year you must

have participated in the Youth Ministry Program in 2007-2008 school year.

Confirmation Program Fee:

The parish asks for $25.00 (per person) for the Confirmation Preparation Program, which

includes the various instructional materials and retreats.

Sponsors:

We share in the life of Christ by our Baptism. By that same Baptism we are called to share

that life with others, and we are empowered by the Spirit of God to do so. A sponsor is a

"fellow traveler" in this journey of faith of preparation for confirmation and commits

himself/herself to accompany a candidate along the way. Thus, a sponsor is a person

who is willing to be a friend, witness, mentor, and guide for the candidate. It is the

responsibility of the sponsor:

To attend the required sessions.

To show the candidate the place the Gospel plays in his/her life, as well as in

society.

To help the candidate during times of doubt and anxiety.

To give public testimony of the Christian life for the candidate.

To watch over the progress of the candidate’s preparation and to be a friend,

witness, mentor, and guide for the candidate for his/her lifetime

Requirements for Confirmation Sponsors:

It is desirable that the sponsors be the same for both the Sacraments of Initiations

(Baptism and Confirmation-Canon 893), thus expressing the unity of these two

aspects of Christian Initiation. Thus, one’s godfather or godmother (or

godparents together) is the ideal sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation. If

you choose not to use your godparent(s) then you may choose one sponsor.

Sponsors must be a least sixteen years of age.

Sponsors must be fully initiated into the Church through Baptism, Confirmation,

and Eucharist.

The sponsor must be living a Christian life with regular participation in the

Eucharist, and not bound by any canonical penalty. Also, if married, he/she must

be married in the Catholic Church.

Sponsors cannot be one of the candidate’s parents.

A Note About Your Parents:

When you were baptized, your parents made a promise to God, through the Church,

that—to the best of their ability they would raise you and instruct you in living a Christian

life through the teachings of the Catholic faith. Your parents have the primary role in your

religious upbringing and instruction.

About Choosing a Confirmation Name:

In the Bible, conversion to following God is often symbolized by a change in name.

Abram becomes Abraham, Simon becomes Peter, and Saul becomes Paul. At Baptism

we receive a name to symbolize our new life in Christ. It probably makes the most sense

to keep your own baptismal name at Confirmation. If you wish, however, you may take a

new symbolic name for Confirmation.

A BAD REASON TO CHOOSE A NEW NAME: Because you don’t like your own

name or because you like the sound of another name.

A GOOD REASON TO CHOOSE A NEW NAME: Because you have been impressed

with the values of a saint about whom you have heard about, read, or studied, and

you wish to imitate that person in your own life—and you symbolize this by taking

his or her name.

Sacrament of Baptism Certificate:

The parish in which you were baptized must record reception of the Sacrament of

Confirmation in your Baptism Record. If you were not baptized in this parish, a photocopy

of your Baptism Certificate is required as part of your registration for the Sacrament of

Confirmation so that your parish of baptism can be properly notified. It is YOUR

RESPONSIBILITY to make certain that a copy of your Baptism Certificate is turned into

the parish. You also may be required to turn in a copy of your birth certificate.

It is desirable the sponsor be the same for both Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism and Confirmation), thus expressing the unity of these tow aspects of

Christian Initiation.

sponsor is needed.

That they be at least sixteen years of age.

That they not be one of the child’s parents.

The sponsor must be fully initiated into the Church through Baptism,

Confirmation, and Eucharist. The sponsor must be living a Christian life with

regular participation in the Eucharist, and not bound by any canonical

penalty.

If they are married, they must by married in the Roman Catholic Church.

**Note: Certificates will need to be provided for verification. This includes

confirmation, and marriage certificates.

If they are single, they must be living in a state of grace.

Must be attending Mass frequently, receiving the Eucharist, and

reconciliation (confession) often.

Attend the sponsor sessions.

Dates for Sponsor Sessions: November 12 th and March 10 th at 7:00 pm -8:30 pm in

Murphy Hall without the candidates and November 28 th at 7:00 pm with the

confirmation candidates.

If you do not have a sponsor, we can provide a sponsor for you. Because this person is

on the same journey of faith with you, the sponsor you choose should be someone who you

are comfortable being around. Someone who is willing to make the commitment to you and

to the program. Remember, it is a honor to be asked to be a sponsor it should never be a

burden. If you have a question about a sponsor please ask a team member or myself.

Thank You and God Bless.
